A-Z '13 - From the Sea

The A-to-Z blogging challenge of 2013 is going on, and today we're up to "F". My theme for 2013 is an A-to-Z list of classic Aussie tunes - either classic or just plain songs I like. For today's song I've chosen:

From the Sea - Eskimo Joe

Eskimo Joe are another band from my hometown who have done fairly well nation-wide. Their biggest hit to date has been "Black Fingernails, Red Wine", though I still kind of think of them as they were when their first single, "Sweater", was released back in the 90s. I'm not really a huge fan of this band, to be honest, but I think this song is great. And not just 'cause it's meant to be a homage to the "Freo Doctor".

Honourable mentions:

  2. Super-cool, I really like their sound. I work with music all day, but rarely have time to stop and just listen. In the car I *gasp* rely on the old fashioned car stereo to get me from point A to point B. I live in the States but close to Canada, and the Canadian stations play great music, but not enough from Australia! Can't wait to check out more of the tunes you post during the A to Z!

  6. Why it sounds familiar to me? I never learn the name of the bands and sometimes not even the title of the songs but this sounds familiar. I like it.

  20. I'm reading Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta and it takes place in Australia. Cold Chisel was one of the bands mentioned and I was curious about them, but hadn't looked them up. Funny enough, an American singer who got repeated several times was Kenny Rogers, who hadn't been in the spotlight for years (decades).

It made me wonder how much American music (and TV/movies) filtrate into Australian culture. Lots? Or just a little? We don't hear a lot about Australian music, at least where I live, but I'm a long way from Australia.

    1. I actually have that book on my TBR ready to be read at some point :) We do get a lot of American music here, in fact it'd mostly be American I would say. We get a lot of our own local sounds as well, of course, but American music is very dominant here as well. I think we get a lot of music from around the world, but American artists would probably be the majority of what we hear.

  21. I was in Australia in 1983 and still have a pile of LP's from those days, bands like The Reels, Meo 245, The Digites, Eurogliders, Crossfire and a few others. I loved the music around then.

Good luck with the journey to Z

  22. I think it is great that you are showing things that are cool about Australia that us "foreigners" might not know about. I'm also digging on your wallpaper. :O)

  26. A neat theme that fits your genre of writing so well. The Eskimo Joe song's message escaped me, but I like the tune and the water sycronized dance. Thanks for stopping by The LoneStar Quilting Bee.

  34. I rather like Eskimo Joe. Saw them support The Offspring once, this was back in the Sweater days. Good fun.
Girl is probably my favourite album, but I do rather enjoy this song. I rock it on Singstar too!

For me, Flame Trees tops it though!
