[AUGUST UPDATE] Cephalopod Book Club & Goals

Once again I've read a Katie McGarry book I really enjoyed. This one might have been my fave yet, though some of the other leading men have probably intrigued me a little more! But I really loved the story of West and Haley.

Haley reminded me a little bit of the main character in the movie "Stick It" (and it turns out her name was Haley too!), but I think book-Haley's self esteem was way lower than movie-Haley's, for most of the book.

It was really nice to see her finally start to believe in herself towards the end of the book, and stand up for herself. And the ending was perfectly happy! I look forward to seeing which book is next in line for me to read in this series!

I'M SO EXCITED!! Finally I can say I have done a good amount of work on one of my editing projects (well, good compared to what I'd achieved previously, anyway ;) ). I've been working on SUNDOWN III, and my main task has been to switch from present tense to past (I have a long way to go there). I was also experimenting with doing 3rd person for one character, but it wasn't working, so I'm reversing that.

I haven't made huge progress, since I've been jumping around in the manuscript, compulsively editing scenes I've been dying to edit for a long time. Constant re-reads of a draft really get you familiar with what you don't like about your manuscript! So that aspect is exciting. But I'm still sort of figuring it out as I go. I don't expect it will be a very smooth ride, considering the jumpy nature of my editing. But it feels really good to be doing something.

I am going on holidays for three weeks, at the end of August. Though I'll be in the US and Canada with friends & family, I do hope to get some writing time in here & there. We'll see how I go, I guess. :)

  2. Hi Trisha - you might need your holiday after being blitzed today - but that's great you enjoyed the McGarry book; while the editing is going the way it should do ... moving on all the time, even if it is a little jumpy. Take care and have the most amazing holiday .. cheers Hilary

  8. What a perfect way to start a holiday...being BLITZED! A hardy "well-done" with what you've accomplished. Enjoy your vacation...and the BLITZ! :)

  9. Doing something is good! Third person point of view from just one character is tough. I did it for my last book and you really have to think of creative ways for the character to know things. Easier when it's from at least two points of view.

  21. Hi-ya. Good luck with the editing! No matter how big of a job it is, editing is always a good thing, because it means you've actually gotten to the point of having something you can work with to improve. Beats starting at a blank page or screen!

Oh, yeah. How ya feeling? A little woozy, maybe? Well, you should, because you are getting BLITZED today! Enjoy.

  27. Thanks for sharing your review of Take Me On.
As for your writing goals and achievements, I say Kudos. It amazes me how many people actually enjoy the editing phase. While I almost hate it, I know it needs to be done and respect it. I praise anyone who can do it without whining, like I do.
    Happy Blitz Day!

  44. I do that, too--editing while writing. I know some folks advise against it, but it works for me. By the time I get to the end of a draft, it's more like a third draft than a first draft. So, I like to think it saves time on the other end.

  60. Hi, I like the goals. I need to take time and write mine down for next week. I have had to change a lot in my stories too. It is hard sometimes when you start writing, you really don't have a feel for where the story will take you. I have tried outlining, but I never stay with it and venture off. ;)

  61. PS Happy Blitz Day. Hope you have a great rest of the weekend and fun on your trip.

  62. I always find that editing progress is far harder to see than writing progress, so I bet you've done more than you think.
